Calligraphy and painting are of the same origin, of which fewer but better paintings can be engraved on stones, appealing to both refined and popular tastes. Portrait Stones of Confucius and His 72 Disciples painted by Li Gonglin of the Northern Song Dynasty was once enshrined and worshipped in the Southern Song Imperial College. As an exquisite work of paintings in ancient China, they are treasures handed down from the Southern Song Dynasty. The other steles such as Plum Steles of the Qing Dynasty were also carefully engraved with excellent workmanship.
